Kenya appeal court rejects bid to amend constitution

Kenya’s Court of Appeal on Friday upheld a previous ruling that controversial changes to the country’s constitution championed by President Uhuru Kenyatta were illegal.

“The president does not have authority under the constitution to initiate changes to the constitution,” court president Daniel Musinga said in a televised hearing.

“A constitutional amendment can only be initiated by parliament… or through a popular initiative.”
